The doorway to death is the last great frontier in a human life. Intellectually, we may all know our lives will end, but in practice, we often act as if death is a mirage, disappearing the closer we move towards it.

One avenue for facing the reality of death more head-on is psychedelic-assisted therapy. Australia is a pioneer of the modality: for a couple of years now, psilocybin-assisted treatment has been available to patients suffering from treatment-resistant depression. In March, the Association for Finnish Psychedelic Education & Culture will screen Lynette Wallworth’s documentary Edge of Life (2025) in Turku, Tampere and Helsinki. The documentary follows two Australian researchers who are doing research on the treatment, and their patients.

Witnessing the effects of psychedelic therapy challenges established worldviews and strengthens the researchers’ sense that something relevant is missing from the ways we encounter death. This leads them to explore whether the wisdom traditions of the South-American Yawanawa people, who have a long history of using consciousness-altering medicinal plants, might have something to offer.

After the screening, we’ll have an audience discussion about the themes of the documentary.

The movie is in English, Portuguese and Spanish, with Finnish subtitles (and English subtitles in the sections where Portugese or Spanish is spoken).
