5MEO: Are Some Doors Better Left Unopened? – Movie screening and discussion on Thursday April 10th, 2025

How do you prepare for a totally unpredictable experience? This question is explored deeply in the documentary 5MEO: Are Some Doors Better Left Unopened? (2020). The Association for Finnish Psychedelic Education & Culture (Psykedeelisen sivistyksen liitto ry, PSL) will host a screening of the movie on Thursday, April 10th, at Kulttuurikeskus Kaista in Tampere.

Many psychedelic documentaries feature an endless stream of talking heads hyping the most recent findings in psychedelic research. 5MEO, however, is foremost a human story that explores the thoughts, hopes and fears around a profound psychedelic experience: Three ordinary, middle-aged men, looking to shake things up in their lives and connect with the deepest roots of existence, decide to embrace some of the most powerful methods. A heavy dose of mushrooms serves as a preparation to something even more intense, catalyzed by 5-MeO-DMT, often called the most powerful psychedelic of them all. The consequences of this experiment are cataclysmic and leave a lot to chew on.

Will the journey bring them what they're searching for? Can you talk about psychedelic realizations without sounding cheesy? And might some doors just be better left unopened?

In addition to the documentary, we’ll explore these themes together in an audience discussion session after the screening. The documentary has Finnish subtitles. Length 73min.

The event takes place in Kulttuurikeskus Kaista, Hatanpään Valtatie 34, entrance E, 2nd floor. The venue is wheelchair accessible, though unfortunately a wheelchair-accessible toilet is not available. The screening starts exactly at 6PM, so to avoid long queues, we kindly ask everyone to arrive in good time.
